Ida Brown Scott Webb [4-1-1918, Forrest, Mississippi; 2-25-2007, Las Vegas, Nevada] |
Ida B. Webb was born in Forrest, Mississippi
on April 1, 1918 to Fannie and Sam Brown. Her mother later married
George Ward and the family moved to a small town just outside of Tallulah,
LA, where Ida was raised along with her other siblings. She attended
Elementary and High School. At a very young age she accepted Christ in her
life and was baptized. In 1938 she married Nathan Scott and they moved to Talabena Plantation in Sondhomier, LA. From this union, she had four children, Nathan, Betty, Willie (Ceter), and Dorothy. Dorothy died at birth in 1942. The family moved to McNary, Arizona in 1940 and after a short stay moved to Las Vegas in 1943. Ida and Nathan were married for over 40 years. He passed away in 1984. She married Luke Webb of Oakland, California in 1980. Luke passed away in 1985. In 1943 she and her mother, Fannie Ward, were among the founding members of the Upper Room Church of God in Christ in Las Vegas, under the leadership of the late Bishop Clyde C. Cox. She immediately became active in the Choir, Sunday School & YPWW. After the death of Bishop Cox, the church’s name was changed to Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ. She continued to serve the church, which is now under the leadership of Elder Leon Smith, until her illness. She worked in the hotel industry for over 40 years and made history when she became the first Black in Las Vegas to work in the Pantry as a salad and sandwich maker. During this period of time, Blacks were only allowed to serve as Maids and Dishwashers. She retired after 35 years from the Desert Inn Hotel. She was active in the community, helping to feed and clothe those less fortunate than her. She served many years as a Foster Parent for the State of Nevada Division of Family Services, providing homes to many children. In 1995, Ida received outstanding recognition as a Community Role Model from the Professional Black Women’s Alliance. She raised one of her grandsons, Stephen Scott, and 3 of her great grandchildren (Stephen Scott, Jr., Lori Scott and Penny Scott). Those left to remember her in their own special way include: her three children: Nathan Scott, Jr., Dr. Betty Henderson and Willie Scott (Ceter), all of Las Vegas; four stepdaughters Elizabeth Dawson, San Bernardino, CA, and Dr. Angela Clark, Las Vegas, Dr. Zelda Anderson of Reno, NV, and Brenda Webb of Northern California; four stepsons: Louis Webb and Rudolph Webb of Northern California, Rholelia (Bob) Webb of Seattle Washington, and Therman Scott of Pine Bluff, AR, two sisters, Virginia Lydick and Fannie Dixon of North Las Vegas, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
