1939.
This aerial view of the square and vicinity was taken ten
years after the one on the previous page. It is easy to see
that it does not show as large an area. The benefit is that
this picture was taken from an angle that gives a better
view of the store fronts and the shape of the cars.

            The most
significant changes which took place in the decade between
the times when the pictures were taken include the building
of the Post Office in 1932 and next door, the addition of
the Goetz Theater complex built in 1931. At the time this
picture was taken there were two more theaters,
					Goetz Junior
theater at 1028 17th Avenue and Chalet Theatre a
block south at 1118-1120 17th Avenue.

            Monroe's
three major hotels were within a block of the square. Eugene
Hotel is on the southwest corner of the square. Just a block
north of that was Monroe Hotel and across the street was
Ludlow Hotel. City Hotel and Green County House were within
three blocks of the square. In addition
Augsburger's Hotel and Restaurant was located on 17th
					Street across from the depot.

            The space
that is now occupied by the parking ramp was previously
occupied by Green County Auto Company (1505 11th Street) and
					Wieman & Snyder, Inc. (1509-11).

            It appears
there was some construction being done on the west side of
15th Avenue just north of 12th Street.

            It is
interesting to see the area known as Spring Square. The
building on the north end housed the
firestation, City Hall, and police headquarters. On
the south end is the city warehouse.

					Luchsingers' Monument Works is
shown in the lower right comer of the photo.
